The most exemplary type of modern defence structure was the pentagonal bastion, where the artillery was positioned ready to attack anyone who approached the wall or adjacent bastions.
Renaissance bastions had Casemates along their flanks, which were semi-covered hollows situated above the embankment of the bastion, in which the artillery were sheltered.
The main theme of the Sant Jaume Bastion, opened in spring 2008 and situated in Ronda Calvi, is military technology in modern history and how fortifications changed and gunpowder artillery evolved. In this bastion you can see weapons, armour and cannon bombs, among other objects, and they can be tried out by visitors.
